Fine hair: which routine should you adopt?

Fine hair has a smaller diameter — this is not the same as having little hair. The right routine focuses on lightness: treatments that add body without weighing hair down, and a healthy scalp.

Key takeaways

  • Fine hair = small diameter; it lacks body and hold, but is not necessarily sparse.
  • Watchword: lightness.
  • Wash with a gentle shampoo and apply treatment to the lengths, not to the roots.
  • Volume is created during drying (upside down) and with light volumizing products.
  • A thickening programme can support hair from within.

What is fine hair?

Fineness refers to the diameter of each hair, determined largely by genetics. Fine hair is more supple, falls flat quickly and holds volume less well. You can have dense but fine hair, or sparse but thick hair: fineness and density are two different things.

The washing & care routine

  • Wash when necessary, with a gentle shampoo that does not weigh hair down.
  • Apply conditioner only to the lengths and ends, never to the roots.
  • Avoid masks and oils that are too rich, which weigh down fine hair.
  • Rinse thoroughly: a product residue is enough to make fine hair fall flat.
  • Finish with cool water for a volumizing effect.

Volume styling

  • Dry upside down to lift the roots.
  • Use a light volumizing mousse or spray at the roots.
  • Avoid heavy serums and waxes throughout the hair.
  • A volumizing powder at the roots can help during the day.

Supporting hair from within

You cannot change the genetic diameter of hair, but you can support its strength. Horsetail (a source of silica) and nettle are traditionally associated with strengthening the hair fibre, and vitamin B8 contributes to the maintenance of normal hair.
