How do you moisturise coily hair?
Moisturising coily hair does not mean oiling it: it first means adding water, then sealing it in with an oil or butter so it stays in the hair fibre. That is the whole point of the LOC method.

Key takeaways
- Moisturising = adding water; nourishing = adding oils and butters. Coily hair needs both.
- Oil alone does not moisturise: it seals in water already present.
- The LOC method (Liquid, Oil, Cream) locks in moisture.
- A spritz of water and treatment maintains moisture between washes.
- Butters (shea, mango) and oils (coconut, avocado, castor) seal and nourish.
Why does coily hair become dehydrated?
The very tight coil pattern of coily hair slows the distribution of sebum and makes the hair fibre more porous: it absorbs water… but loses it just as quickly. As a result, without a suitable routine, hair quickly becomes dry, rough and prone to breakage again.
The LOC method, step by step
- L (Liquid): moisturise with water or a water-based treatment.
- O (Oil): apply an oil to seal in moisture.
- C (Cream): seal with a nourishing cream that coats the hair fibre.
- The LCO variation (cream before oil) can be used depending on your hair's porosity.
Care between washes
Between wash days, refresh moisture: use a spritz (a water spray, optionally mixed with a treatment) on the lengths, followed by a little cream or oil to seal it in. Protect your hair at night too with a satin pillowcase or bonnet.
Mistakes to avoid
- Believing that oil moisturises: it seals, but does not add water.
- Skipping the water step and applying only oils and butters.
- Using products that are too heavy, which weigh hair down without moisturising it.
- Leaving hair unprotected at night (friction, dryness).
