Curly hair: which routine should you adopt?

Curly hair is naturally drier: sebum does not travel easily along the spiral. The right routine therefore focuses on gentleness, hydration and definition.

Key takeaways

  • Curly hair is drier: sebum does not travel easily along the curl.
  • Wash gently, without harsh sulphates, and detangle under water.
  • Hydration and nourishment are priorities (mask, cream, oil).
  • Define curls on wet hair and protect them while drying.
  • Refresh spray revives curls between washes.

Why are curls drier?

On straight hair, sebum glides easily from the roots to the ends. On curly or coily hair, the spiral shape slows this movement: the lengths and ends receive less natural protection and are therefore drier, more prone to frizz and breakage. This is why it is important to provide hydration and nourishment from the outside.

The curls routine, step by step

  • Wash with a gentle shampoo suitable for curls.
  • Detangle under water, with conditioner in hand, using your fingers or a wide-tooth comb.
  • Nourish two to three times a week with a mask.
  • On soaking-wet hair, hydrate (cream), then define (gel or mousse).
  • Dry naturally or with a diffuser, without touching.

Care between washes

  • Revive curls on waking with refresh spray and a little water.
  • Sleep with a satin pillowcase or scarf to limit frizz.
  • Space out washes; cleanse the scalp without stripping it.
  • Avoid heat and dry brushing.
