Hair loss and stress: what is the link?

Yes, stress can cause hair to fall out — but with a delay: hair loss often occurs 2 to 3 months after the peak of stress. The good news is that it is most often temporary.

Key points to remember

  • Intense stress or a shock can trigger diffuse hair loss.
  • Hair loss often appears 2 to 3 months after the episode (telogen effluvium).
  • It is generally temporary once stress is managed.
  • There are two areas to address: reducing stress and supporting the hair fibre.
  • Hair loss that persists or worsens should be assessed by a professional.

Can stress cause hair to fall out?

The link is real: significant stress, emotional shock or a period of exhaustion can cause an unusual proportion of hair to shift into the resting phase, then the shedding phase. This is known as telogen effluvium. Hair loss is diffuse (across the whole scalp) rather than localised.

Why the 2 to 3-month delay?

A hair that has shifted into the resting phase does not fall out immediately: it remains in place for a few weeks before shedding. This is why hair loss is often noticed two to three months after the stressful event — when, sometimes, everything is already getting better.

How can it be addressed?

  • Reduce stress: sleep, physical activity, relaxation, support if needed.
  • Take care of your diet and avoid deficiencies.
  • Use targeted treatments that reduce hair loss and strengthen the hair fibre.
  • Be patient: the cycle rebalances within a few months.

The Luxéol solution

To support hair loss linked to stress or fatigue, the Reactive Hair Loss range works on the surface to reduce hair loss and strengthen the hair fibre, alongside better stress management.

Clinically proven

Luxéol Reactive Hair Loss range

Shampoo, conditioner, mask and spray enriched with keratin (patented process), to help reduce reactive hair loss and strengthen the hair fibre. Clinical results: −61% hair loss with the spray and −44% with the shampoo*, after 3 months. Sulphate-free, made in France.

When should you seek advice?

If hair loss lasts, worsens, or is accompanied by other signs (persistent fatigue, thinning areas), consult a doctor: an assessment can rule out a deficiency (iron, thyroid) or another cause.
