Coily hair: which routine should you adopt?

Coily hair (types 4A to 4C) is the driest and most fragile: its very tight spiral prevents sebum from travelling down the hair shaft. The routine therefore focuses on gentleness, hydration and nourishment.

Key takeaways

  • Coily hair (4A–4C) has a very tight spiral: it is naturally dry.
  • Sebum does not reach the lengths easily: hydration and nourishment are priorities.
  • Wash gently (sulphate-free) and detangle hair coated with a treatment.
  • Seal in hydration with an emollient (LOC/LCO method).
  • Low manipulation and protective hairstyles limit breakage.

Understanding coily hair

The tighter the curl, the more fragile and dry the hair fibre. On coily hair, the sebum produced by the scalp can barely travel down the spiral: the lengths and ends lack natural protection. This is why this hair needs a regular supply of water and emollients.

The routine, step by step

  • Wash gently with a sulphate-free shampoo, massaging the scalp.
  • Detangle hair coated with conditioner, using your fingers or a suitable brush, from ends to roots.
  • Nourish with a mask (shea butter, oils) on the lengths and ends.
  • Hydrate, then seal with a treatment cream.
  • Style damp hair coated with a treatment (wash-and-go, twists…).

Hydrate and seal

The winning duo: water (or a water-based treatment) to hydrate, then an emollient (oil, butter) to seal in that hydration within the hair fibre. This is the principle of the LOC method (Liquid, Oil, Cream). Without this sealing step, water evaporates and hair becomes dry again.

Limit breakage

  • Handle as little as possible and detangle gently.
  • Adopt protective hairstyles (braids, twists) without pulling too tightly.
  • Sleep on a satin pillowcase or wear a bonnet.
  • Nourish regularly to keep the hair fibre supple.
