How fast does hair grow?
On average, hair grows by around 1 to 1.5 cm per month, or roughly 12 to 15 cm per year. This rate mainly depends on factors we cannot choose — genetics, age and hormones — but a few levers can help create the best conditions. Let’s take a closer look.

Key takeaways
- Hair grows by an average of 1 to 1.5 cm per month, or around 12 to 15 cm per year — the equivalent of 0.3 to 0.5 mm per day.
- This rate is mainly determined by genetics, age and hormones and, to a lesser extent, the season.
- Each hair follows a cycle: it only grows actively during its growth phase, which lasts several years.
- You cannot artificially “boost” the rate, but you can remove obstacles: deficiencies, an unbalanced scalp and breakage.
- The clinically proven Luxéol Hair Growth Protocol measured 6 cm of growth in 3 months* — equivalent to 60% faster growth*.
How fast does hair grow on average?
The commonly accepted benchmark is around 1 to 1.5 centimetres per month. Over a year, this amounts to around twelve centimetres, or roughly 0.3 to 0.5 millimetres per day. This is an average: some people’s hair grows a little faster, while others’ grows a little more slowly.
This rate is explained by the hair cycle. Each hair goes through a long growth phase (known as anagen), lasting from two to seven years, followed by a brief transition phase and a resting phase at the end of which it falls out. Only the growth phase actually lengthens the hair — and it is its duration, more than its rate, that determines the maximum length your hair can reach.
What influences hair growth rate?
Several factors come into play, most of which are beyond our control:
- Genetics: this is the number one factor. Growth rate and the duration of the growth phase are largely hereditary.
- Age: growth tends to slow down over the years.
- Hormones: they influence the hair cycle, explaining changes during pregnancy, postpartum and menopause.
- Hair type: very curly or coily hair, which grows in a spiral, may appear to gain length more slowly even though it grows at the same rate.
- Diet and health status: deficiencies (iron, zinc, protein) can affect hair vitality.
- The season: many people notice slightly stronger growth in spring and summer.
Does hair grow faster at certain times or in certain areas?
Hair growth is relatively even across the entire scalp. The impression that “it grows faster at the front” mainly comes from the fact that we notice the hair around the face more. As for the seasons, growth may be a little faster in warmer weather, but the difference is not dramatic.
However, one persistent myth needs correcting: cutting your hair does not make it grow faster. Cutting affects the ends, not the root where growth begins. It is still useful for removing split ends and preserving length, but it does not change the growth rate.
Can hair growth be accelerated?
As the basis is genetic, you cannot “reprogramme” the growth rate. However, you can create the best conditions for hair to grow to its full potential and, above all, not break before gaining length:
- A varied diet, rich in protein and micronutrients.
- A healthy scalp, the “soil” where hair grows.
- Gentle care habits and less heat to limit breakage.
This can be complemented by products specifically formulated to support and accelerate growth, whose effectiveness has been measured in a clinical study. That is precisely the purpose of the protocol we have developed.

The Luxéol Hair Growth Protocol: 6 cm of measured growth in 3 months*
Because hair growth is a concern shared by many, we have specially designed a protocol to address it — and measured its effectiveness in a placebo-controlled clinical study.
The hair growth protocol combines three products designed to work together: a shampoo, a leave-in conditioner and a serum. Its naturally derived formula includes castor oil, ginseng extract, Amla fruit, biotin and panthenol, selected to support the hair fibre and growth.
The clinically proven result: 60% faster growth*, equivalent to 6 cm of measured growth in 3 months*, with stronger hair that is less prone to breakage and easier to detangle. For a complete approach, the protocol can be included in an In&Out routine, combined with a food supplement programme containing rocket and horsetail.
Hair Growth Protocol Luxéol
