Coily hair: how can you reduce breakage?

Coily hair breaks more easily: its tight spiral creates weak points, and the fibre, often dry, does not withstand manipulation well. The solution: moisturise, handle it less and protect it.

Key points to remember

  • The tight spiral creates tension points where hair breaks more easily.
  • Dry hair is brittle hair: moisturising is the first line of protection.
  • Handle hair as little as possible and detangle gently, on hair coated with treatment.
  • Protective hairstyles and satin limit breakage.
  • Nourish regularly (shea butter, oils) to keep the fibre supple.

Why does coily hair break?

There are two main reasons. First, every bend in the spiral is a point of mechanical weakness. Second, because coily hair is naturally dry, its fibre is less supple and more prone to breakage. Handling (rough detangling, tight hairstyles, heat) does the rest.

Anti-breakage habits

  • Moisturise and nourish regularly to keep the fibre supple.
  • Detangle gently, on damp hair coated with treatment, from the ends to the roots.
  • Avoid excessive heat and overly tight hairstyles.
  • Trim the ends regularly.
  • Sleep on satin to limit friction.

Protective styling

Protective hairstyles (braids, twists, two-strand twists, buns) keep the ends — the oldest and most fragile part — safe from friction and daily handling. The golden rule: do not tighten too much (to avoid weakening the scalp) and continue to moisturise while wearing the style.
