Anatomy of damaged hair
Damaged hair has a more porous fibre and less tightly packed cuticle scales, so it struggles to retain moisture. This leads to dryness, reduced flexibility and a tendency to break. Visible signs include a split or eroded cuticle, split ends and areas of breakage: these are external signs of damage.
At the heart of the hair are disulphide bonds, strong links between the cysteine molecules that make up hair keratin. Together, they form its internal framework. These bonds give hair strength, maintain its shape and help it withstand stress. If they break, hair becomes limp and stretchy and appears fragile: these are internal signs of damage.
